HISTORY OF KAIKKOLAN/KERALA MUDHALI

Years back some peoples migrated from tamilnadu and they have occupied some districts in Kerala. They are belonging sivakulam or veeabhagu ghothram and they have engaged with “naithu” (weaving) mainly for kasavu or pattu for meeting their and their families’ day-to-day life. They belongs to tamil culture and their language was also tamil even-then staying in Kerala and they have celebrated tamil connected celebrations.

They are doing kaithari (kuzhithari) so they became Kaikolan and the other name of lord sive ie.. Muthaliyar so they are also known as muthali, because they belongs to sivakulam or veerabhagu ghothram, so they have preserved devotional engagements connected with godess mariyamman pooja and connected functions like “kundam irakkal, sulam kuthal, thee chatty vilayattam...”

Earlier days, ie.. in the days of earlier kerala kings like cheran, cholan and pandiyan, all the dresses are made-out only with kaithari, but now-a-days it is all changing slowly means, instead of kaithari, machineries are conquered the field. In the village of Palakkad, Pazhampalakode is the old village of kaithari, the peoples from palakkod of tamilnadu are settled in one village and the village become pazhampalakode and other settlers are pachapalayam of dharmapuri, chencherimala of Coimbatore and the creators of thiruvilwamala koottala.

Thozhil (Employment)

The main occupation of kaikola’s is kaithari naithu and some are depended to agriculture work. Gradually the birth of machined mills, they purchased supporting articles from market and made kaithari dresses and sell out in the market. Listlessly private businessmen entered but this also not given any positive breath. Ultimately the poverty of these people are increased and gradually they are stepped-down in all the circle of life.

But, a nice change has been occurred when co-operative societies are started, unfortunately some peoples are make some mat-functions in the rebate scheme, so 1980 Kerala Government has stopped the rebate scheme and this may affected, the fruitful function of some Kaithari societies like...Eravathodi, Palappuram, Elappully etc..and huge amount had been lost in this way.

Culture

Even-though they are living in Keraia, but keeping tamil culture and heritage. All the celebrations and festivals are tamil culture basis and also Kerala festivals like Onam, Vishu etc.. are also celebrating in the Kerala style. Especially, the festivals like..Thiruvaathira, Karthika deepam etc..connected with lord siva celebrating.

Education

Educatio.n is the keY to success in life for all the human beings. But in our case, our people are not having healthy education background. The main reasons for the same is poor financial background. The income from the thozhil (employment) is very poor. So sparing money is may not be possible almost all the times than daily home needs.

Cultural activities

Kaikola or Muthali category peoples are sticked their own name in the cultural activity of Tholppavakooth. This is one of the leather puppet show, which bring our attention to the ancient period’s devotional history. It is a temple connected show. First this type of show showed in Pallasena temple, then Mundur Palakeezh kavu. Now it is almost all the temples are staging this programme. The first koothu artist of kaikola category was one Mr. Krishnanaavalar. But Mr. Krishna pulavar is the famous koothu artist in the present century. He has a lot of assistants are there, some among them are kunnath ravunni nair, kunathara lakshmana pulavar, kailayad panchu nair etc... but the sons of krishnapulavar ramaswamy pulavar, palappuram annamala pulavar are kept their own foot-print in the thoippava koothu. In this category, Shri. Annamala pulavar is the faDulous OF dignified personality, the others are palappuram angappa pulavar, velu pulavar, velayudha pulavar, thankamani pulavar, kanniyampuram pazhaniyandi pulavar, karuvanaamkurussi subramaniya pulavar etc. are also keeping their own foot-print in tholppavakoothu.

Like tholppavakoothu, udukkadippattu is also one of the other art form of kaikkola category. It is mainly celebrated in the mariyamman kovil. Also in summer seasons, some drama also played in the open ground or mariyamman kovil premises.

Other festivals.

One of the important festivals other-than the above is pongal-pana. It is the resemblance of brother- sister relations. It is concreting the relationship of brother-sister. But, the actual festival of kaikkola is Mariyamman Pooja, it is husband-wife relations story telling. In Kerala it is mariyamma but in Karnataka it is Ellamma. In Kerala, mariyamma is the god form of Kolara, Vasuri etc.. if doing pooja with full-hearted kolara and vasuri like diseases will not affected, it may be belief.

All the functions are conneted with mariyamman pooja is same but the bank of nila, some rural villagers are keeping ”Therukuthal”, it is connected with sfiri Muthukumaranayanar, who was a saint of lord siva. Now we can see, in almost all the mariyamman temple we can see the deity of Shri Muthukumaranayanar also.
